Street art of Belfast

The Street Art of Belfast, Northern Ireland

Belfast is a city with a colorful political history that has been split between the Loyalists and Nationalists. Although “the troubles” have mainly subsided, there are still many signs of the past strife throughout the city. The street art  is spread throughout the city and are combination of Nationalist, Loyalist and Cultural murals, and the majority have politically infused messages. It’s great to walk around and absorb the art or take a black taxi tour to get even more information on the meaning behind the murals!

Great selection of pictures Jenna. There is little doubt in my mind that the street art in Northern Ireland is the most politically/cause related of any around the world. Such a shame that not more people expressed their strong views through the medium of art rather than violence.

Let’s hope those dark days don’t return.

Great gallery! We are fascinated by Street Art, and seek it out whenever we travel. Most recently, we were wowed by the street art scene in Colombia: Cartagena, Medellin and Bogota in particular. Belfast is high on our travel wish list. I’ve got some family roots close by I’d love to explore. Thanks for sharing.

I’m a big fan of street art and this is a great selection! I think it can tell us a lot about a place… Like here there seems to be a heavy emphasis on politics and freedom.
